Diversity Training

Situation:

One of our clients, in the field of education, was striving to leverage workplace and classroom diversity. They were interested in enhancing the understanding and appreciation of diversity among their administrators, staff, teachers and students. H-C-HSM was asked to work with the client to achieve the following objectives:

• Provide diversity skills training for administrators, teachers and staff
• Identify areas for improvement related to how the organization viewed diversity in the workplace and classroom
• Provide recommendations for improvement
• Address the concerns of Parents of Color, whose children are students in this organization

Solution:

H-C-HSM implemented the following activities to address the issues and concerns of the client regarding workplace and classroom diversity:

• We conducted focus groups with administrators, teachers and staff to gather information about the workplace and classroom diversity issues.
• We administered the Discovering Diversity Profile® from Inscape Publishing. This instrument measures the participants’ perspective in four diversity areas:
  • Knowledge
  • Understanding
  • Acceptance
  • Behavior
• We provided the client with a report identifying gaps, areas needing immediate improvement, and recommendations for creating a diversity-friendly work and classroom environment.
• We designed, developed and delivered a customized diversity training program that addressed the issues identified via the focus groups and Discovering Diversity Profile®.

Outcomes:

• Educators have an individual development plan for enhancing their diversity competency
• Over 100 participants attended customized diversity training
• The training provided insight into how to create a work and learning environment that is diversity friendly
• Educators learned how to deliver diversity topics in the class with ease
• Educators learned how to effectively address stereotypical comments and inappropriate behavior in the workplace and classroom
